What Is Sports Card Funding and How Do I Land My Grail With It?

Sports card funding is a service where a company purchases a collector's target card upfront, then lets the collector pay it back over time by consigning cards from their existing collection. At The Wharf, that window is 45 days and the whole thing is tracked in real time through a client portal.
If you've been in this hobby long enough, you've had this exact moment. The card you've wanted for years finally pops up. Right price, right grade, right timing. And you're stuck choosing between two bad options: come up with cash you don't have sitting around, or sell off pieces of your collection under pressure, at a worse price than they deserve, just to move fast enough to not lose the card.
I've been doing this since 2020. The Wharf is now a top seller on Fanatics Collect, and I've structured hundreds of funding deals for collectors ranging from five-figure upgrades to now multiple $800,000+ Michael Jordan Grail cards. Card funding is the mechanism I built to solve that exact problem, and once you understand how it works, you'll wonder why more collectors aren't using it.
The problem with "save up" or "sell first"
Most collectors think about buying and selling as two separate events that happen at two separate times. You save for months to buy a grail. Or you decide to sell something, wait for it to close, and then go shopping with whatever's left.
Both of those approaches have the same flaw. They ignore the fact that your collection already has value sitting in it right now. You don't have to wait to "have the money."
In a lot of cases, you already have it. It's just not liquid yet.
That's the whole idea behind card funding, sometimes called sports card financing. Your existing collection is capital. Not someday, not once it sells. Now.
How card funding works, step by step
Here's our process, start to finish.
Submit a funding request. You come to us with a card you want, whether it's on eBay, COMC, an Instagram listing, or a live Fanatics Collect auction. You share the link and the target price.
We secure the card. Sometimes that means winning an auction on your behalf. Sometimes it means working out a private deal directly with the seller. Either way, once we have the card, it moves to "secured" status in your client portal.
You consign cards from your collection. You send us the pieces you're ready to move. As those sell, the payouts automatically draw down what you owe on the card we funded.
You track the balance in real time. The client portal shows exactly what's sold, what's pending, and what's left to cover. No spreadsheets, no guessing.
You settle up within 45 days. If your consigned cards cover the full amount, you're done. If there's a gap, you can pay the difference in cash or send another batch to consign. If your consignment sales end up covering more than you owed, we pay you the difference.
Our current funding fees are a flat 3% fee for the entire amount funded ($300 minimum fee). So if we fund a $5,000 card, you owe us $5,300. If we fund a $50,000 card, you owe us $51,500. Any consignments or cash just apply to that total balance owed, so there are no additional fees for cash payments.
Why the 45-day window matters
The timing piece is what makes this actually work, and it's the part people underestimate. Selling and buying at the same time almost never lines up cleanly. You either sell too fast and take a worse price, or you wait for the right buyer and miss the card you wanted.
Card funding removes that conflict entirely. You get the card the moment it's available. Your collection gets sold on its own timeline, at fair market value, without the pressure of a ticking clock on the purchase side. Two problems that used to fight each other are now solved separately.
Is card funding for you?
I'll be straight with you. This isn't a gimmick for people trying to buy cards they can't afford. It's for collectors who already have real value sitting in their collection and just haven't had a way to put it to work yet.
If you've got a stack of cards you're not actively excited about anymore, cards you'd sell without blinking if the right opportunity came along, or even a few pieces that were once grails that helped you get to your current level, that's exactly the kind of collection this was built for. You're not waiting to become a portfolio manager someday. You already are one. This just gives you the tool to act like it.
It's also worth knowing that some of the collectors who use funding most heavily could afford their target card outright. They use it anyway, for the same reason a lot of investors avoid unnecessary taxable events: it keeps their capital in cards instead of triggering a cash transaction they don't need. If that describes your situation, our consignment program also offers cash advances up to 50% on qualifying cards, which pairs well with funding if you're managing several moves at once.
Common questions about sports card funding
Is there a fee for using card funding? Yes, there is a standard 3% fee added to the total funded amount, with a minimum funding fee of $300.
What happens if my consigned cards don't cover the full balance? You can pay the remaining amount in cash or send another batch of cards to consign. You have 45 days total to settle up.
What if my consigned cards sell for more than I owe? We pay you the difference. It only ever goes back in your pocket.
Which platform does The Wharf operate on? We work exclusively through Fanatics Collect (formerly PWCC), where we're a top seller.
Can I use funding for a card that isn't listed on Fanatics Collect yet? Yes. We've secured cards through eBay, COMC, Alt, Goldin, Heritage Auctions, Instagram listings, and private sales, in addition to live Fanatics Collect auctions.
Where to start
If you want to go deeper before you do anything else, I put together a free 5-day email course The Grail Funding Playbook called that walks through exactly how to think about your collection as capital, how to figure out which cards to move first, and how to size up whether your collection can cover a grail you've got your eye on. It's the same framework I use with collectors every day, laid out step by step and delivered straight to your inbox.
If you're already sitting on a collection and there's a specific card you've had your eye on, you can also visit our page on funding or just send us your list. We'll take a look at what you've got, talk through what a funding request would look like for the card you want, and go from there.
Happy collecting!
